Pistol Range - Information

Gun Club

2020 saw quite a few changes made to the pistol range. As you can see here, members have been busy trying to make this facilty both a safe environment for you as well as an enjoyable place to shoot.

The “berm” which is the primary safety feature of our range has been moved out and increased in height so that we can now set targets out as far as 25 yards. This huge improvement is entirely thanks to our much esteemed member Frank Arriola (who brought a D8 bulldozer and operated it magnificently – at no cost whatsoever to the club – massive thanks to Frank!).

Why? Having a 25 yard range offers shooters the opportunity to test their skills at a full NRA competition distance, or sight in their 22LR rifles. It also provides a proper distance for the Bandon PD to perform their routine officer marksmanship certification. We support our PD!

Walls have been constructed between each shooting position in the shed. These walls are 6” thick and have been filled with crushed rock up to a height of 6’ 6”. A concrete slab has been added in front of the line and the new walls extend out to the shed roof line.

Why? The club has recently seen a big increase in new members, many of whom are new to shooting. We trust that all members undergo basic safety training and now understand that all firearms must be pointed down range at all times. But, just in case, the new walls will stop an accidental discharge from crossing within the shed. The walls also dampen some of the sound and create a less distracting environment when several shooters are using the range.

Additional heavy timber fascia boards have been installed below the roof edge at the front of the shed and steel “baffle boards” have been erected to the right and left of the range out to the original primary baffle structure.

Why? The #1 safety priority is to ensure that all projectiles are safely contained within the confines of the range. The ultimate objective is to ensure that no “blue sky” can be seen from each firing position, whether standing or seated. We have neighbors nearby and their safety and protection is one of our utmost concerns.

Lights have been installed inside the shed.

arrow

Why? With the addition of the walls and fascia the light level on the firing line is reduced and particularly during the late afternoon during the winter months extra light is now there if shooters need it.

Signs have been posted all over the pistol shed reminding shooters about basic safety and range rules.

arrow

Why? There has been an influx of new shooters recently. But both those new shooters (and some older ones who should know better!) have not always followed basic safety rules. If you are at the range and notice any other shooter not following the rules, please point it out to them and ask that they please comply. Safety is #1. Any shooter who chooses to ignore the rules is not welcome. Example #1 || Example #2

All of these upgrades have been carried out by club members at NO COST to the club.

Many thanks to Frank, Don B, Don H, Tom, John P, Wes, Roy and Justina for their hard work and contribution.
